SUBJECT: Walk Outs
At James A. Foshay , we recognize and affirm students’ rights to express themselves on issues they care about. However, student safety remains our top priority. This policy outlines expectations for student participation in walkouts and the support available on campus for student expression.
Expectations for Student Participation in Walkouts
1. Remaining on Campus – While students have the right to express their views, we strongly encourage them to remain on campus, where they are in a safe and supervised environment.
2. Leaving Campus – Per the Parent-Student Handbook, students who voluntarily leave the school campus or classroom during a demonstration will be directed to return. Once students leave campus, the school is not responsible for their safety or supervision.
3. Safety Concerns – Off-campus demonstrations may present risks, and we are aware of incidents where students have been harmed. We urge families to discuss safety considerations with their children.
4. Attendance & Consequences – Leaving campus without permission is considered an unexcused absence and may result in consequences per school policy. However, If students decide to walk out, and choose to return they will be allowed back on campus.
Safe Spaces for Student Expression
To support students in expressing their views in a safe environment, Foshay has designated a
Student Expression & Resource Space available during lunch. This space provides:
• During Nutrition and Lunch the Counselors will be in the Auditorium providing students with a safe place for students to share their thoughts and concerns and access valuable resources.
We appreciate the support of families in reinforcing these guidelines to keep all students safe while encouraging constructive student expression.
