Welcome to Mr Darryl Newhouse's Foshay Home Page.

 

Mr Newhouse has been a Teacher at FoshayLearning Center since 1992

 

He was the school's Math Department Chair for 13 years prior to assuming the duties of Foshay's Manufacturing, Robotics & Engineering Academy in 2012 Lead Teacher-Director of Operations. He currently teaches the Project Lead The Way Engineering Curriculum for middle school 6th, 7th and 8th grades and the Project Lead The Way High School Engineering Curriculum for grade 9 and 10.

 

Prior to the pandemic all of Mr Newhouse's PLTW courses were hands on group based learning projects where students developed problem solving skills, critical thinking skills, computational thinking skills as well as team work skills, communication skills and research skills as students worked through the various project based learning challenges.  "Do the Math and Save the World"  is one of his classroom slogans. Since returning from the pandemic, he is gradually getting back to where students take charge of their education and explore STEM/STEAM based on their own interest and desires.

 

Mr. Newhouse encourages his students to read the material before class and expects students to come into class with questions and answers. He guides his daily lessons by going over warm-up questions that pertain to the reading from previous homework assignments. By having students struggle with the unfamiliar warm-up and working through the problems help students consume knowledge and gain confidence..

 

Mr. Newhouse teaches 6th through 10th grade students PLTW courses which include Design & Modeling, Automation & Robotics, Computer Science Innovators & Makers, Intro to Science Technology Engineering Systems, Energy & Environment, Green Architecture and high school course which include Honors Introduction to Engineering & Design, Honors Principles of Engineering, and Capstone Project class-Aerospace Engineering.  There is a huge emphasis on mathematics and communications throughout a students 5 year journey through the Manufacturing, Robotics & Engineering Academy.

 

In addition, Mr Newhouse has been heavily involved in Math, Engineering, Science, and Achievement (MESA) for more than 30 years as a MESA Advisor and he has brought significant recognition and honor to Foshay through the FIRST Robotics Competition as the lead mentor/coach/founder of Foshay FIRST Robotics Team 597 HOF for the last 24 years.

 

Students who complete the 5 year journey of the Manufacturing, Robotics, & Engineering Academy become part of the Tech Academy their 11th and 12th grade years

Mr. Newhouse is passionate about Mathematics and his hobbies include Robotics & his favorite "knuckles heads"-the Three Stooge (Moe, Larry & Curly)
