Hello and welcome parents to the 2024-25 school year. I am Ms. Jones and I will be the instructor for Ethnic Studies. This is a semester-long required course. This means your 9th grader will need this class to graduate High School. Moreover, the primary focus is American History; however, students will learn about the narratives of people of color in America, who, like the Europeans who settled, the Native American, Latino/Hispanic American, Asian American, and Black Americans also have ancestors also participated in the American Experience of exploration, settlement, and development of this nation. Not only will students be learning the history of people of color, but They will also examine their own rich histories. I have taught 9th graders for almost twenty years, so I understand that many still need help with organization, with various skills in reading and writing and even self-awareness and maturity. Most of our work will be done in class, and the notes, classwork, and vocabulary will be recorded in their student notebooks, maintained, and stored in class. However, students are expected to be responsible and complete any assignments and readings that may be given to them to complete at home. Moreover, if students are absent, they are expected to make up their missed work. I use Equitable Grading on a scale of 1 to 4. Please be aware that this is based on their skills and the number of opportunities students will be given to demonstrate they have shown they consistently know and understand the skill. Consequently, if they earn a 4 the first time around, this doesn’t necessarily demonstrate mastery in that overall skill. Therefore, as we cover the skills and various opportunities to practice those skills, their grades will become more fluid and concrete. Please encourage your child to come prepared, be willing to participate, and communicate with me if they have any questions. Much of the work we do in class is posted on Schoology. Please feel free to email me at [email protected]. I prefer to go directly through Schoology. I look forward to learning more about your 9th grader. Sincerely, Ms. Jones
