South LA School Surprised with $100K in Musical Instruments
Featured
SOUTH LOS ANGELES (FOX 11) - Students at the James A. Foshay Learning Center in South Los Angeles were surprised by $102,000 worth of musical instruments by Stubhub and the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation.
Uploaded Apr 24, 2019 by Lisa Beebe
It was the largest gift yet from Stub Hub, which has committed to giving away $3 million worth of musical instruments in the next 3 years.
“Seeing the looks on the kid’s faces when we lift the curtain is worth the price of admission,” said Stub Hub’s Jay Harren.
Vince Womack is the director of the jazz ensemble.
“I’m very proud of them, because I tell them all the time if you keep working hard, you never know what might happen!”
“Music education gives kids the ability to overcome obstacles,” he said.
Many of the kids in this under-served neighborhood struggle to pay for instruments. This gift will empower more students to join the band.
The instruments were revealed in a school assembly as a surprise.
“When you guys opened the curtains, I was ecstatic. It was really cool to see!” said trumpeter Miss Lidia Saunders.
Harren is grateful for the opportunity to pay it forward.
“I’m so excited. This is life giving! This makes the job all the more better!” -
